Beach Walk to the Mouth of the Tijuana River
Google Maps: Seacoast Drive, GPS: 32.5666, -117.1324
Leaders: Peter Thomas and others.
This is a nice walk along the beach, starting from the southernmost end of Seacoast Drive in
Imperial Beach, and proceeding south to the mouth of the Tijuana River. We will look for
remaining wintering ducks, Surf Scoters, Western and Clark’s Grebes, Western Snowy Plovers,
Sanderlings, gulls of several species, and maybe some early arriving summer visitors. Finding
the bits of kelp, mollusks, and other marine life that have washed up along the shore is an added
attraction. At the end if there is interest we may walk out on the Imperial Beach Pier to look for
any pelagic species and a Pelagic Cormorant. No restrooms. Capped at 15 participants.
Directions: From I-5 going south, exit at Palm Avenue, and go west. Proceed through Imperial
Beach, following the signs for Palm Avenue to the left, as Highway 75 forks off to the right.
Proceed to Seacoast Drive, turn left (south), and drive to the end of the road and park. Meet at
the marsh overlook.
