Anza-Borrego Desert State Park – Resident Birds and migrating Swainson’s Hawks
Google Maps: Probable meeting place will be Christmas Circle Community Park, Borrego
Springs, GPS: 33.2562, -116.3756
Leaders: Peter Thomas and others
This will be an overnight trip to the desert. Anza-Borrego is noted for its wildflowers in the
spring. The desert birds that we’ll be looking for include Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Black-
throated Sparrow, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Verdin, and early spring migrants. Thrashers are
possible. Viewing the Swainson’s Hawk migration at the Borrego Hawkwatch should be a
highlight. A group dinner will be an option for Wednesday evening for those who wish to
participate. Arrangements for accommodations will be up to the individual participants. Further
details after registration. Capped at 8 participants.
Directions: Allow at least 2 hours driving time from San Diego. Take Route 78
to Santa Ysabel. Drive north on Route 79, east on Route S2 (Hawk Alley). Turn left onto Route
S22, which becomes the winding Montezuma Road as it descends into Anza-Borrego. At the T-
intersection, turn right and continue to Christmas Tree Circle in the middle of Borrego Springs
where we will meet.

Registration required.
