LGBTQ+IA friendly Hike!

Description

Wednesday, May 22 !
San Diego Bird Alliance presents another Queer Hike! heart

May Leaders: Annie Gorbonosov, Willow Eichler

These hikes are a safe space for all LGBTQ+IA and all allies.  Join us this month for our first sunset hike! These outings are for all people who seek a non-judgemental community - birder, hiker, or just looking for community, everyone is welcome!

We're offering a second May hike in lieu of last weekend's cancelled trip. Join us as we explore a popular coastal trail of San Diego and meet other likeminded birders and hikers along the way. This will be an easy, laid-back birding walk to end the day with a beautiful sunset over Point Loma.

Along the trail you can enjoy plenty of beautiful coastal sage scrub as well as views across the ocean to the horizon. We can expect to see seabirds and shorebirds, including gulls, terns, pelicans, and cormorants. The sage scrub also attracts tits, towhees, and warblers along with many of the usual backyard birds. This trail is a San Diego favorite - expect to share the trail (and parking space!) with many others.

Registration Required. Maximum capacity 25 attendees. While registration for the trip is free, making a donation helps more leaders to offer unique trips. Please donate!

If registration is full and you would like to attend, please send an email or text to Willow Eichler. Use weichler@sandiegobirdalliance.org or (801)318-2347 to request to be added to the trip roster.

About Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Dedicated in 1983, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a 68-acre resource-based park stretching along the Pacific Ocean bordering the western edge of Point Loma.

  • The 18-acre linear section of the park lies to the west of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard between Adair and Ladera streets.
  • The 50-acre hillside section, a designated multiple species conservation area, links to the 640-acre Point Loma Ecological Reserve beginning at the Navy property to the south.

The park's topography includes intricately carved coastal bluffs, arches and sea caves. It affords inspiring panoramic ocean views. From the cliffs, California gray whales often can be seen migrating annually from the Bering Sea to Baja California and back.

Directions:

Take Interstate 8 west to the end. Then follow Sunset Cliffs Boulevard through Ocean Beach to the cliffs and Ladera Street. You may need to find street parking either along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard or the nearby streets. Parking is extremely limited at the park, especially as sunset nears. Plan extra time to park, carpool if you can.

We will meet in the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park parking lot. See the map below for extra guidance on where to meet and how to navigate there from street parking.

Happy Birding!
