About the Guides:

Francisco Bassó Medel is a wildlife conservation biologist dedicated to scientific outreach and conservation of the lesser known and sometimes feared animals like invertebrates, bats, reptiles and amphibians native to San Diego and Baja California. Like many of these animals, he needs to travel across the border, and like them, it's often difficult or frustrating to live in such a fragmented and deteriorated ecosystem, where moving along what were once natural migration routes is now a struggle for survival. That's where he lives, between two countries, two languages, among buildings, trash, brush, and the sea. And as a "Bugologist," or "Bichólogo" in Spanish, his goal is to use education and art to connect these two sides, and to remind you that despite the obstacles that stand between us, we have the power to preserve nature, because we are still part of the same ecosystem, where even the smallest creature has something beautiful to teach us, and to remind us that the survival of our region is worth fighting for.

Lucía Tapia is passionate about protecting the environment, raising awareness about native plants and sharing knowledge and resources with the community. She is a Canyoneer in-training that wants outdoor education to be accessible to all via free, bilingual experiences throughout San Diego County. Thanks to the 2025 Earth Advocates program, Lucía has found meaningful ways to show up for her community and connect people with spaces they may have never visited.
