Description
Dune Defenders: Coastal Habitat Restoration in Mission Bay
Join the San Diego Bird Alliance’s Dune Defenders to help restore vital coastal dune habitat and support the nesting grounds of the California Least Tern, one of Mission Bay's most iconic and endangered seabirds.
Volunteers will assist with habitat restoration activities such as removing invasive vegetation, maintaining native plant communities, and occassionally perform other land management tasks.
No experience is needed. Just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to get your hands sandy! All tools, gloves and guidance will be provided. Come prepared in close-toed shoes and bring a water bottle.
📍 Location: Varies weekly/monthly within Mission Bay
🗓️ When: Weekly on most Wednesdays starting November 5 through the end of March. Check event calendar ahead of time for future dates.

Detailed Directions to North Fiesta Island:
North Fiesa Nesting Preserve on Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, San Diego (32.785195, -117.215450)
- Drive onto Fiesta Island. Keep right at the fork. Do not follow signs to the San Diego Youth Aquatic Center, just continue down the road.
- After about a quarter mile, you'll arrive at the nesting site. You’ll be looking for a chain link fence with an open gate and signs that say “California Least Tern nesting area.”
- Drive slowly as the gate is easy to miss and you'll be forced to drive around the whole island again.
- Parking is available just inside the gate or on the right hand side, off the road. *Note: No parking on left hand side of the road*
