Guided by artist and educator Beatrice Darimont, this workshop is designed to connect you with nature, get your creativity flowing, and the explore the fascinating chemistry of gall ink!

What to Expect:

We will begin with a brief introduction on the history and traditional uses of natural dyes and gall ink by artists, leaders, and native communities. Then we'll head out on a guided nature walk through the Canyon's scenic native plant trail to responsibly gather oak galls and other plant materials.

Back at the Nature Center, Beatrice will lead you through each step of the ink-making and dyeing process. Finally, we’ll wrap up with fun creative activities where you'll get to experiment with your freshly made ink - bring your journal or sketchbook and let your imagination flow!

What is a gall?

Galls are unique growths produced by an oak tree in response to a native wasp laying its eggs on their branches. The gall acts as a nursery for the eggs as it provides protection and nourishment for the eggs as they hatch and grow. The gall grows as the larve matures until it eventually emerges from the gall. This relationship is called commensalism—the wasp benefits while the tree remains unaffected. It is important to note that for this workshop, we will only be collecting inactive galls to ensure minimal disturbance to wildlife and their natural processes.

What to bring:

- Journal or sketchbook to try out gall inks

- Comfortable walking shoes

- Reusable water bottle

- Hat/sunscreen/sunglasses are highly encouraged!

We will meet in the parking lot near the entrance and then walk to the Tecolote Nature Center as a group.
