Summary
Description
Join us on Earth Day at Anstine to remove invasive plants so that we can help the native plants at the preserve thrive while also enjoying a Spring afternoon.
Non-native plants can be considered invasive when they spread rapidly and outcompete native plants for resources. Anstine has a blend of habitats that all experience their own unique pressures. We will work on removing thistles and other plants from our Oak Woodland Trail, as well as trimming back the extensive periwinkle found near the front of the preserve.
The plants we will be focusing on removing include bristly plants, so long sleeves and pants are highly recommended; gloves will be provided!
While we work, we can discuss the native plants we’ll be helping and listen for the birds found at Anstine. We will have binoculars to borrow! Anstine is normally open to the public on Saturdays only so this is another chance for you to visit.
This volunteer work party is supported by the Two For The Trails grant from Athletic Brewing to help us maintain Anstine’s trails and make sure we are fire-prepared. Invasive plants can not only crowd out native species but also increase fire risk by altering the landscape or contributing to fuel mass.
It’s a hands-on way to make a real difference for the preserve, get some fresh air, and connect with fellow volunteers.
No experience needed! Just bring your energy and a love for nature! 🌿
