Summary

Join us on the first Saturday of every month for our monthly volunteer work parties to help improve and appreciate our native habitats.

Description

This Saturday, we will be removing invasive plants and clearing brush from the Riparian Trail. The Riparian Trail is shaded by the arching willows and grapevines, which will help us stay cool as we get into warmer weather. The wetter soil means this is a popular spot for invasive plants to sprout so we will work on removing them so that the native plants are not competing for space. Additionally, we will work on breaking down and removing fallen branches and loose brush to help reduce fire risk.

The plants we will be focusing on removing include stinging nettle and some other bristly plants, so long sleeves and pants are highly recommended; gloves will be provided!

This volunteer work party is supported by the Two For The Trails grant from ATHLETIC BREWING COMPANY to help us maintain Anstine's trails and make sure we are fire-prepared. Invasive plants can not only crowd out native species but also increase fire risk by altering the landscape or contributing to fuel mass. Native plants help support the plant community as well as the critters that live there.

It’s a hands-on way to make a real difference for the preserve, get some fresh air, and connect with fellow volunteers.
