Summary
Description
We’ll be getting a headstart on July’s work party due to the holiday next week! This Saturday, help us cut back and clean up the cattails at the pond. We’ll focus on removing the old vegetation along the Pond Trail and making sure the view from the shore doesn’t get crowded out.
Southern cattails (Typha domingensis) obscure much of the Anstine pond but also provide shelter for water-loving birds like Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) and the Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas) as seen in the Anstine logo. Cattails can be routinely trimmed to prevent overtaking bodies of water.
Adult volunteers are welcome to try out our limited pairs of waders and harvest from the pond itself! Be prepared for pond muck being flung about.
This volunteer work party is supported by the Two For The Trails grant from ATHLETIC BREWING COMPANY to help us maintain Anstine’s trails and make sure we are fire-prepared. Downed plants and brush increase fire risk, and routine removal can help clean up trails and make them more safe.
It’s a hands-on way to make a real difference for the preserve, get some fresh air, and connect with fellow volunteers.
No experience needed! Just bring your energy and a love for nature! 🌿
