Summary
Description
Join San Diego Bird Alliance and UC San Diego's Natural Reserve System for our annual Docent Training!
This training prepares you to support Wander the Wetlands, a program that welcomes the public to experience the marsh twice a month through birding, fish monitoring, and weeding.
Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or simply curious about coastal ecology, this is a great opportunity to get involved, connect with the community and share your passion for nature.
No prior knowledge is necessary, just a willingness to learn!
Docent Information
Schedule: Wander The Wetlands opens to the public from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Docent schedule is from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM.
Commitment: Flexible! Docents sign up for shifts at their own pace — no minimum requirement. That said, the more you show up, the bigger the impact you'll have on the community and local conservation efforts.
Activities: As a docent, you'll help lead engaging, family-friendly programs that highlight the magic of this unique coastal habitat and the ongoing efforts to restore Mission Bay. Program activities include bird walks, fish seining, invasive plant removal, nature data collection (iNaturalist and eBird), Bioblitzes, and more! The program often partners with local nonprofits and cross-border collaborators from Baja California, offering bilingual programming that reflects and welcomes our diverse community.
Accessibility: The terrain varies and may include gravel, concrete, dirt, rocky, and muddy areas depending on the activity performed.
Location: Most activities occur at the Kendall-Frost Marsh Field Station, with some at Crown Point. You will always be able to check the location before signing up for shifts.
