Help restore native habitat for wildlife by removing invasive plants at the Anstine-Audubon Nature Preserve in Vista. As part of a 0.5 acre restoration project, volunteers will remove invasive weeds that serve as competition to our newly planted native species and become flash fuels in the dry season. You can make a difference for the more than 100 species of birds and variety of native insects, reptiles and mammals that depend on our preserve.

Tasks include hand-pulling weeds that will become flash fuels in the dry season and caring for newly planted native species. Weed removal will also focus on clearance around newly-planted natives, to reduce competition for resources.

  • Attire: Please wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes that can get dirty. This opportunity takes place outdoors with little or no shade so wearing sun protection such as sunscreen and a hat is recommended.

  • Bring: Water. Gloves if you have them.

  • Physical Requirements: The location of the restoration site is the northern most portion of the property so volunteers will need to be able to hike along a single track trail with a moderate incline. Volunteers will need to be able to either squat down or sit on the ground to remove, as well as bend down to pick up items. Unfortunately this opportunity is not able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations and the space where this project takes place is not wheelchair accessible.

  • Waiver: All volunteers will be required to sign-in and sign San Diego Audubon's liability waiver when they arrive.

This opportunity is hosted in partnership with California Climate Action Corps, a program of California Volunteers, Office of the Governor.
